2011 Vintage surprises despite climate challenges

On the 10th of March I reported: Most grapes in by now. The grapes are healthy with bunches and grapes slightly smaller than average, leading to a bit smaller crop. Rain stayed away during harvesting days making it an easy harvest.

Vintage holds promise despite hardest harvest in living memory
"Short, sharp and brutal," is the way Erhard Wolf, Distell's chief grape and wine buyer, has described the 2011 Cape vintage. "Fortunately quality has not been compromised but from a logistical point of view, this has been an exceptionally difficult year. We have seen generally outstanding red and mostly good white grapes delivered to the cellars, despite setbacks brought on by very demanding weather conditions.

The worst flooding in 23 years caused major destruction in the Orange River Wine Region this year, with over 800 hectares of vineyard being totally submerged under water when the Orange River broke its banks in January and February.

2011 Wine grape harvest will be smaller
The 2011 crop is currently estimated to amount to 1 255 561 tons. According to surveys in mid-February by producer cellars and viticulturists in the various regions, the crop will be approximately 0.3% smaller than the 2010 harvest.

An early summer heat-wave that hit the Western Cape winelands at just the right time played a major role in the outlook for this year's grape harvest.
