Wine Tourism Conference
Wines of South Africa was a Sponsor at the Wine Tourism Conference in Napa, California

Wines of South Africa was a sponsor of the first annual Wine Tourism Conference, held in Napa, California from November 16-17, 2011. A major focus this year was Napa but the principles and lessons learned were applicable to everyone involved in wine tourism around the world. Conference organizers packed in many interesting sessions over only two days, including: how wine tourism fits into global and local economies how to market your own region, winery or business improving the wine tourism experience customer service selling more of your product sharing best practices and the future of wine tourism.

Wines of South Africa was on hand to greet attendees the first morning with a table in the Meet the Sponsors Hall. We also poured some fine South African wines on day one at the lunch break, engaging with attendees who were interested in tourism and wines of South Africa. In the session titled " A Rising Tide Raises All Boats," with Michael Mondavi (Mondavi Family Wines), Allen Shoup (Ch. St. Michelle and Long Shadows Vintners) and moderator Clay Gregory (Legendary Napa Valley), reviewed the history of wine and tourism in Napa Valley and in Washington State, demonstrating the importance of the wine industry working hand in hand with hotel and tourism management as well as regional and city planners and agriculture. "Tourism and the lodging industry follow the wine industry in their rises and dips. Collaboration is key," stated Mondavi. "Tourism is important and shouldn't be a by-product - stand back, broaden your base, and plan for the future," advised Shoup. Mondavi pointed out that the Napa wine industry annually provides 40,000 jobs, $11 billion to Napa County, and $42 billion to the national economy.

WOSA was a big hit at the SWE Annual Conference in Providence, Rhode Island this summer (Aug. 3-5). Doug Frost, MW, MS, hosted the friday luncheon tasting of top South African wines and a South African-inspired meal. We poured some great reds and whites at the Wines of the World Tasting in the Johnson & Wales University Culinary Arts Museum, which was a fantastic venue! Tracy Kamens's seminar -- "Everything Old is New Again- A Reintroduction to South African Wines" amazed attendees with its nine superb wines. We look forward to another exciting conference next year in Oregon.

Wine Bloggers Conference
Wines of South Africa at the Wine Bloggers Conference in July

WOSA was in Charlottesville, Virginia from July 21-24 as sponsors of the Wine Bloggers Conference. There was an enthusiastic and wine-savvy crowd of bloggers in attendance for this very well-organized conference. WOSA's CEO Su Birch presented on the theme of "Why Our Winelands Are Wild" at Ignite Wine, and we ran a raffle for a free trip to Cape Wine Europe. Blogger Liza Swift of @brixchix won the raffle and we look forward to seeing her this October in London, along with a contingent of bloggers and sommeliers from the USA.

WOSA Wine Workshops for Trade
WOSA/USA is back from a whirlwind tour with our wonderful winemakers, who really did themselves proud at the Wine Workshops for trade and media this June in New York City, Washington, D.C., and Chicago. We had enthusiastic audiences of sommeliers, retailers, media and other trade at each venue. Attendees were impressed by the speakers' passion and commitment, and were awed by the quality, range and versatility of the wines.

Consumer events in the evenings were co-hosted with the James Beard Foundation's "Greens" in NYC and the Washington Wine Academy in DC.

Workshops held in the U.S. included Flagship Reds, with Emil den Duik (De Toren), Bruwer Raats (Raats Family Wines), Mike Ratcliffe (Warwick and Vilafonté, and Henry Kotze (Morgenster); Chenin Blanc's Diversity, with Ken Forrester (Ken Forrester Wines), Carl van der Merwe (De Morgenzon), Neil Groenewald (Bellingham DGB) and Richard Kershaw (Mulderbosch); Good Better Blends with Francois Haasbroek (Waterford), Niel Bester (Plaisir de Merle) and Wilhelm Pienaar (Nederburg); and Always Something New out of Africa with Johan Reyneke (Reyneke Wines) and Vernon Henn (Thandi).

WOSA/USA Sustainability Seal Launches at Earth Day Events in NYC
Wines of South Africa New Sustainability Seal Brochure and Video Launch in USA

Wines of South Africa launched its new Sustainability Seal and Video at the Earth Day New York celebration in New York City's Grand Central Station in late April. From a one-day festival in 1971, Earth Day has grown to a three-day celebration in New York City, aimed at educating and increasing the awareness of citizens about environmental issues. WOSA's sustainability message and certification seal are perfect examples of what industry can do to support such efforts and indeed South Africa goes far beyond other countries in its efforts.
