South African Wine Magazine, Autumn 2010
Download the latest issue of South African Wine magazine here in pdf format.  In our autumn issue, we cover the Swartland revolution, which author Margaret Shakespeare says is led by a band of maverick growers and winemakers. Read why these wines are characterized as wines with a sense of place.  Next up is our trip along the Constantia Wine Route, home to the valley that was the historic birthplace of wine in South Africa. Graham Howe gives us a snapshot of the wineries and culinary attractions on this route, which draws visitors from all over the world to the global gastronomic destination in Cape Town's backyard. If you're looking for wildlife as part of your wine journey, look no further than the Boland, where the Cape Leopard Trust is sponsoring two zoologists to conduct field studies of this big cat, which lives right in the midst of the Cape Winelands. Wendy Toerien provides a glimpse of the elusive Cape Leopard and explains why it is an important element in maintaining the delicate balance in the area's ecology. Joanne Gibson updates us on the Fundi project. This innovative program to train South African wine sommeliers was begun before the World Cup, with the goal to ensure that well-trained and wine-knowledgeable staff would be in place in South African hotels and restaurants when guests arrived for the games. The project was supported by sales of Fundi, a wine specially produced in limited quantities for sale in export markets, proceeds of which went to fund the program. Speaking of the World Cup, we wondered how the games affected sales of South African wines in the US. We assigned intrepid reporter Eunice Fried to the case, and our answer was.... a lot and not much! Find out what retailers, restaurateurs and importers think of the effect of the games on wines sales.
