Wines of South Africa West Africa Tour 2017
Tale of Two Cities

With just a few days to go to Nelson Mandela Day, a group of South African wine producers packed their bags and promotional material, shipped their wine samples and traveled to Nigeria and Ghana on the WOSA West Africa Tour 2017, in celebration of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela’s birthday to showcase their wine.

The tour started in Lagos, Nigeria with a wine tasting and exhibition held at Four Points By Sheraton Hotel on Friday 14th July from 18:00 -22:00, where over 400 guests comprising of local trade, media and consumers attended the event and were treated to canapés and over 80 different wines presented by 15 producers. The event was coordinated and organized by Wines of South Africa and worked in partnership with local media who gave us extensive coverage building up to and during the event.

We even had a surprise visit by the First Lady of the Republic of South Africa, Mrs Bongekile Ngema-Zuma who attended the show while on an un-official private visit to Nigeria. She was well received by guests and producers who expressed appreciation for her support of the event and the South African Wine Industry.

Nigeria remains one of South Africa’s key strategic markets for growing exports and through these tasting we are able to reach a large number of stakeholders in market and create platforms for our producers to be introduced to potential importers and distributors.

The tour proceeded on to the second leg on Saturday 15th July in Accra, Ghana where it started in the morning at Movenpick Hotel with a presentation of an interactive Introductory South African Tweetup wine course where 28 attending bloggers, lifestyle journalists and hospitality staff participated and were awarded certificates of attendance on completion of the course.

This tweetup wine course concept saw #drinkSAwine trending in Ghana with 532 posts, 216 users, 952,738 reach and 12,903,375 impressions.

As the day progressed the delegation of wine producers arrived and made it just in time from a Lagos flight and went straight on to a B2B session organized between producers and trade.

Later in the evening we held the wine exhibition and tasting form 19:00–22:00 where +- 600 guests, comprising of local trade, media and consumers were treated to canapés and different wines presented by producers.

The Ghana market presents a huge opportunity for growth of the South African wine category and good positioning in the formal on-trade and is an excellent brand building market.
