CAPE WINE AUCTION INJECTS FUNDING INTO WINELANDS EDUCATION
Cape Town, 23 July 2018: The Anna Foundation was again a beneficiary of the Cape Wine Auction’s 2018 generous donation towards the essential education work done on rural farms in the Western Cape.
The event, which took place at Rustenburg Wines in Stellenbosch, raised a staggering R17 million for education for Winelands based charities. The Anna Foundation was one of the xx charities that benefited from the proceeds raised at the global showcase of South Africa’s finest wines earlier this year.
The generous donation from the prestigious wine auction will build on the Anna Foundation’s afterschool 3R’s Programme. R-eading (education, literacy programmes, homework support), R-unning (sports programmes, fun runs, cycling mountain biking) and R-ighting (life skills, drama).
“A portion will be allocated to mother-tongue instruction educational computer programmes for after-school projects in the rural areas where we operate,” said Anna Brom, founder of the Anna Foundation.
“There are 834 learners in the 3R’s programme and each child benefits annually from 200 hours of educational support, 100 hours of computer access, 100 hours of reading and 200 cooked meals,” she added.
Anna Brom’s all-encompassing holistic approach to building a solid community of support around the child has proven a success over the past 14 years. Her goal of building the child’s self-esteem and self-worth are evident in the success of children who are integrated into Anna Foundation programmes and there are reliable statistics showing educational progression in their literacy and communication skills.
“Over a five-year period, our literacy results on rural farms in the Western Cape show between a 20%-40% improvement,” said Carol Sampson, senior project management at the Anna Foundation.
Expanding access to quality after-school programmes is one of the objectives of Western Cape Education Department’s Game Changers. The aim is to get 112 000 learners from poor schools into after school programmes by 2019.
“It’s believed that children in high-fee paying schools enjoy thousands of hours more educating time than learners in no- or low-fee paying schools. The after school programme at the Anna Foundation, is designed to bridge the gap”, added Sampson.
In 2011, the trends in International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMSS) showed that South African learners have the lowest performance among all 21 middle –income countries that participated and in the 2012 Annual National Assessments for Grade 9 Mathematics, 91,9 % of the learners scored less than 30%.
Within this context, the Anna Foundation has made a concerted effort to use innovative and creative methodology to consolidate the maths taught to the children at school.
The Anna Foundation’s grade and age specific worksheets, readers and Edu- peg booklets (a math activity book) were the primary resources utilised. The Education Programme incorporates various themes to teach the Afrikaans and Mathematics syllabi to learners. Fun activities, concrete material and practicals are included to enhance and extend the children’s learning.
