South Africa has a strict Wines of Origin Scheme which demands 100% of grapes must come from any specific region or ward for that to appear on the label. As such, despite being awash with diverse vineyard sites, producers would often label the wine with broader origins such as Western Cape or Coastal, where a wine contained grapes from several different areas.
Over time, however, winemakers and viticulturalists have begun championing the nuances of particular sites and vineyards. This has driven a small group of producers to come together and form the Cape Site Specific collaboration. The focus is on wine made from specific sites, single estates or specific wards, within the Wine of Origin scheme.
